Flooded Tokyo in 2024
The flooding of Tokyo is a major event that happens in Weathering with You.
Background[]

The portrayal of an ancient weather maiden
According to ancient beliefs, weather changed on a whim and humans were powerless to resist. However, there existed thin lines that connected mankind and the sky, the weather maidens. In order to stabilize the ever-changing weather, the maidens must sacrifice themselves to heaven.
In 2021, the weather maiden of Tokyo was Hina Amano who could use her prayer to temporarily clear the sky and bring forth the sun. As the weather got worse through the summer, Hina received more request for her power, which gradually assimilated her with the sky. On August 22, Hina sacrificed herself and was transported to Ohigan.
Cause[]
The sacrifice was undone by Hodaka Morishima who ran through the torii gate and was transported to Ohigan. Up there, he reunited with Hina and they both fell through the clouds. He convinced her to live for herself and declared his love for her, causing her to abandon her duty.
As the couple reappeared at the torri gate, the downpour resumed immediately and continued even after three years, causing a large portion of Tokyo to be flooded.
Aftermath[]
Most of the Tokyo metropolitan area ended up flooded, rendered uninhabitable, probably causing the displacement of more than 40 million people and, probably although never specified as previously, hundreds of deaths and billions of dollars in damage, bringing the Japanese economy to its knees.
Although at the end of the film several people can be seen walking and living in the elevated parts of the city moving in ferries and boats.
Trivia[]
The whole flood event doesn't coincide with the ending of Your Name, In Your Name the reunion of Taki Tachibana and Mitsuha Miyamizu happened on a sunny day in the Spring of 2022, which is impossible given that it has been raining endlessly in Tokyo since the summer of 2021. However, Makoto Shinkai confirmed he doesn't care about the timeline differences in his works, reinforcing the theory that they are different timelines and not the same.
Meanwhile on Suzume, that sees a normal Tokyo, Makoto Shinkai has confirmed that his previous movies do not have any connections with Suzume.
