Nogi Station opened on 16 February 1963. On 1 April 1987 the station came under the control of JR East with the privatization of Japanese National Railways (JNR).

Takaki Tōno originally did not plan his train to stop at this station, but due to a heavy snowfall, the train had to stop for a long time here from 7:00pm, before resuming its journey.
