It was originally a residence of the Naitō family in the Edo period. Afterwards, it became a garden under the management of the Imperial Household Agency of Japan. It is now a national park under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Environment.

The garden, which is 58.3 hectares in area with a circumference of 3.5 km, blends three distinct styles: a French Formal and English Landscape in the north and to the south a Japanese traditional. A traditional Japanese tea house can be found within the gardens.

In The Garden of Words[]

During rainy days in 2013, Takao Akizuki preferred to spend time here rather than go to school. On these days, he met Yukari Yukino who drunk beer and ate chocolate by herself in a pavilion. Slowly but surely, during these chance meetings they started to open up to each other.

In Your Name.[]

The garden can be seen briefly in some scenes around the NTT Docomo Yoyogi Building.
